Day #15 Are You Emotionally Intelligent- Take the quiz (28 Days of Self Love)

Mental Health / Self Care Plan 2022

by Candace L. Smith

In 2014 I had an emotional break down.  I was at the lowest point in my life.  I'm grateful that God put people in my life that were able to provide guidance towards the help I needed.

I began to learn how to manage my mental health.  I began to understand how not taking care of myself mentally affected my everyday life, relationships, business life.

One of the tools I gained from therapy was developing a mental health plan.  Every year I would make resolutions for the new year.  I would make a plan for my physical health such as going to the gym, starting karate and other health related plans.

I would make goals concerning my career and even my spiritual life, but I never did that for my mental health.

Every since 2015 I started developing my own mental health plan.  I would decide times in my life where I would choose to go to therapy.  Everyone doesn't value therapy or seeking help so you have to be intentional or it becomes easy to fall back into familiar unhealthy patterns.

This year I've decided to focus on emotional intelligence.  Emotional Intelligence is "the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one's emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically."  (oxford dictionary)  Being emotionally intelligent benefits your personal relationships and in business.

My plan is to discuss this throughout the year in therapy, read a variety of books, of course watch a few YouTube videos and do my best to make what I learn apart of my life.  Here's a quiz to test your emotional intelligence and a list of books by black authors.

Books:

1. How To Improve Your Emotional Intelligence At Work and In Relationships- Shawn Kent Hayashi
2. Your Are Your Best Thing - Torana Burke and Brene Brown
3. Emotional Intelligence - Daniel Goleman
4. The Unapologetic Guide To Black Mental Health -Rheeda Walker PhD
5. Emotional Self Care for Black Women- Stress Less Press

When Jokes Cross the Line - What Cardi B's Comments Really Reveal

When Jokes Cross the Line What Cardi B's Comments Really Reveal Phatabulous Magazine Staff Growing up, I was always the fat one. There were other girls with my name, but I was always described as “the short fat one.” I hated it. I never got so used to it that I was okay with it, I just learned not to lash out every time. Most of the time, I let it go because I realized people weren’t trying to get a rise out of me. Maybe they didn’t know. Maybe they didn’t care. But the truth is, it always hurt. That’s why when Cardi B, one of the most recognizable celebrities in the world, made recent comments that many found fatphobic, it struck a nerve. While speaking with fans online about her WWE t-shirts selling out, Cardi joked: “The box sets are completely sold out, especially because you fat fks — clearly you guys are fat as fk, no Chick-fil-A for y’all.” She went on to say: “Now, knowing that my fans is fat, I can’t even make fun of fat people no more. Don’t call me fatphobic, y’all, ’cau...
