Blessed and Bold: The Fierce Duo Behind Blessed Jewelry’s Cover-Worthy Creations

Blessed and Bold: The Fierce Duo Behind Blessed Jewelry’s Cover-Worthy Creations

Phatabulous Magazine’s latest cover is giving all the glitz and glam we deserve, thanks to the creative dynamo duo behind Blessed Jewelry—Sonja and Ceterija Barney. This Jacksonville-based mother-daughter team isn’t just creating jewelry, they’re crafting masterpieces that have us screaming, “Take our money!”

Founded in 2009 (yes, they’ve been blessing our lives for a minute), Sonja and Ceterija’s journey is a beautiful blend of bold creativity, family connection, and pure artistry. Ceterija, with her killer eye as a graphic designer for Duval Connect, brings the designs to life, while Sonja, the OG visionary, scours inspiration like the fashion alchemist she is.

This tag team is behind the hottest accessory on our cover: a pair of rectangular earrings that dangle from a silver chain-link triangle, featuring a powerful African woman in silhouette. The design? Inspired by none other than that unforgettable scene in Spike Lee’s School Daze, where shapely women take the stage in dresses that scream “fierce!” For this Phatabulous cover, it was all about collaboration.

Sonja and Ceterija worked hand-in-hand with the cover woman and our very own publisher, Candace Smith, in a design session that was nothing short of fabulous. They created four stunning sets of earrings and bracelets, each more iconic than the last.

But that cover look? A show-stopping mix of two designs, because when you’re as fabulous as the Phatabulous crew, one idea just isn’t enough. And let’s talk about the day of the shoot, darling.

Stylist Devyni came through and placed each piece of jewelry on Gena with the kind of precision that only a true pro can pull off. The result? Absolute flawlessness. Every single shot? FIRE! Blessed Jewelry isn’t just about looking good—it’s about feeling empowered, dripping in culture, and flaunting that unapologetic confidence we all deserve.

So if you haven’t snagged a pair from their latest collection yet, sis, what are you waiting for?

FAMU Announcer’s ‘Ozempic’ Comment Sparks Outrage- FAMU Announcer Joe Bullard vs. ASU Honey Beez

When the Mic Crosses the Line: The ASU Honey Beez, Joe Bullard, and the Fight for Respect BY Phatabulous Magazine Staff 10-5-2025 It was supposed to be another electric halftime show , the type of performance that makes HBCU culture shine. But what should’ve ended with applause and celebration turned into a moment that stunned thousands both in the stands and online. As the Alabama State University Honey Beez, a nationally recognized plus-size dance team, exited the field after their energetic performance against Florida A&M University, FAMU’s longtime band announcer Joe Bullard took the mic and made a comment that has since echoed far beyond the stadium: “The new face of Ozempic.” The remark, referencing a popular weight loss drug, drew audible gasps from the crowd. In video clips that quickly went viral, you can hear fans questioning what they just heard. What was meant to be a lighthearted halftime moment suddenly turned into a public moment of body-shaming, disrespect, and disb...

Ask Candace - Why Do I Still Struggle To Love My Body?

Ask Candace Is Back - #2 There’s something powerful about questions that linger. A while back, we invited readers to write in, about love, bodies, confidence, boundaries, and the quiet thoughts that don’t always make it into group chats. The responses came. Some arrived quickly. Others trickled in over time. And a few sat with me for a while, waiting for the right moment. That moment is now. Ask Candace was always meant to be a space where honesty could breathe. Not perfection. Not performance. Just real conversations about navigating life in a body, and a world, that often has too many opinions. Since our last column, so much has shifted. Bodies are being policed again. Thinness is being repackaged as “wellness.” Dating feels heavier. Many of us are healing, unlearning, starting over, and redefining confidence on our own terms. So we’re bringing Ask Candace back, not because I have all the answers, but because sometimes what we need most is to be reminded that we’re not alone, not bro...

When Jokes Cross the Line - What Cardi B's Comments Really Reveal

When Jokes Cross the Line What Cardi B's Comments Really Reveal Phatabulous Magazine Staff Growing up, I was always the fat one. There were other girls with my name, but I was always described as “the short fat one.” I hated it. I never got so used to it that I was okay with it, I just learned not to lash out every time. Most of the time, I let it go because I realized people weren’t trying to get a rise out of me. Maybe they didn’t know. Maybe they didn’t care. But the truth is, it always hurt. That’s why when Cardi B, one of the most recognizable celebrities in the world, made recent comments that many found fatphobic, it struck a nerve. While speaking with fans online about her WWE t-shirts selling out, Cardi joked: “The box sets are completely sold out, especially because you fat fks — clearly you guys are fat as fk, no Chick-fil-A for y’all.” She went on to say: “Now, knowing that my fans is fat, I can’t even make fun of fat people no more. Don’t call me fatphobic, y’all, ’cau...
